Since India's opener Shikhar Dhawan was injured and ruled out for two weeks, Rishabh Pant will join the team as a cover for India.
The 21-year-old left-handed batter will fly to England on Wednesday to prepare for the wounded opener after being approved by the Indian Cricket Control Board on Tuesday.
Upon arrival, Pant will begin training immediately to prepare for the encounter between India and New Zealand on the second day of Thursday.
The BCCI revealed in a statement: "The Indian team opened the batter Dhawan is currently receiving observations from the BCCI medical team. The team management has decided that Dhawan will remain in England and his progress will be monitored.
"Dhawan was injured in the back of the left hand between the index finger and the thumb in a league against Australia on Sunday."
According to the latest Intel, Dhawan, a minor fracture in the next two weeks may stay off the court, which will cause India to let KL Rahul and Rohit Sharma open for the team.
Dhawan was excluded from the injury after being injured by Pat Cummins in the Australian conflict earlier on Sunday.
